Madrid in one day??
1. Atocha Station-Paseo del Prado- Cibeles Fountain -Retiro Park- Puerta de Alcalá
You will have to choose whether to visit or not one of the Museums: Prado, Thyssen-Bornemissa or Reina Sofia. It is called The Golden Art Triangle.
In Madrid there are two big soccer teams: When Real Madrid wins people celebrate it at the Cibeles Fountain, when Atletico de Madrid wins, their followers will celebrate at Neptuno Fountain. You can see both on the Paseo del Prado.
2. Plaza de Sol – calle Mayor – Plaza Mayor- Mercado de San Miguel
You will always find it opened: eat at the Mercado de San Miguel (all kind of good quality tapas). Well, it is a market after all, so don ‘t expect a nice table with a comfortable chair, but it’s really charming.
3. Mercado de San Miguel-Plaza de la Villa- Plaza Isabel II ( Royal Theater)- Royal Palace
This area (around the Plaza de la Villa) is the so-called “Madrid of the Austrias” from the times of when we were an Empire but with a middle age city court. Just walk around the old streets of the center. There are beautiful spots: Almond Tree Street, Sacramento Street, San Gines Church (in San Ginés Street you can have the very typical Madrilian “chocolate con churros” and get some extra sweet energy), Descalzas Reales Monastery…
– End of the trip-
Come back completely exhausted.
NOTE: Be careful with your wallet (but you probably already found this recommendation in your guide book 😉
